Regeneración

Vincent Price Museum

 Photos by Monica Orozco

“Maria” is a multimedia Danza Azteca performance inspired by the true story of a young immigrant girl who was sold for $200 to a man who enslaved her for five years. Maria was wrongly convicted of murdering the man and served 22 years of a 25-year life sentence before being released on parole.

“Maria” was first performed in 2007 in front of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s home in Brentwood, CA, during the campaign to release Maria Suarez from prison. It was recreated in 2018 for Regeneración: Three Generations of Revolutionary Ideology at the Vincent Price Museum.
